Terms of Use
Last updated: 16 July 2026
- We publish our own performance measurements. We do not sell servers.
- Rankings are computed automatically. Advertising never affects them and is always labelled.
- Every result is a snapshot of a specific server on a specific date — not a guarantee.
- You may quote us — with a link and with the context (plan, location, date).
1. About the service and who runs it
VPS Observatory (the “Service”, “we”) is a private research project publishing results of automated performance measurements of virtual private servers (VPS).
The Service is run by a private individual as a personal project and is not a legal entity. We do not sell servers, do not provide hosting services and are not a party to your relationship with any provider.
By using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the Service.
2. Definitions
- Provider — a company offering VPS services that the Service publishes data about.
- Test (benchmark) — a single run of our measurement agent on a specific server instance at a specific point in time.
- Metric — an individual measured value (for example, random read IOPS).
- Score — a derived 0–100 value calculated from metrics using the published methodology.
- Ranking — an ordered list of providers computed automatically from scores.
3. What the Service does
The Service rents or obtains access to VPS instances, runs an identical set of tests on them and publishes the results: CPU, memory, disk and network measurements, plus system facts about the server.
The Service is informational and reference in nature. Published data is intended for comparison and is not professional advice, a purchase recommendation, or a warranty of fitness for your workload.
4. Nature of the data
Every result refers to a specific server instance, plan, location and test date. This matters:
- performance may differ on another physical node of the same provider;
- a result may change over time — due to noisy neighbours, infrastructure changes or plan changes;
- a measurement is a snapshot in time, not a permanent property of the service.
Results are not an offer, a guarantee or a promise by the Service or by a provider. We publish what we measured — not what you were promised.
5. Rankings and how they are computed
Rankings are computed automatically from measured metrics using a published formula with a stated version. There are no editorial scores, no “stars” and no manual position adjustments.
Paid placements and affiliate relationships never affect ranking positions or score calculations. This is a core principle of the project.
Tests paid for or initiated by a provider are labelled as such, but are scored with exactly the same formula as every other test.
6. Advertising and affiliate links
The project is funded by advertising and affiliate programmes. We disclose this openly:
- Advertising blocks are explicitly labelled “Sponsored” / “Advertising” and are visually separated from rankings.
- Affiliate links: a click through to a provider’s site may go via an affiliate link, and we may earn a commission on a signup or purchase. Your price does not change.
- Outbound links carry nofollow sponsored attributes and pass no search engine weight.
- Neither advertising nor affiliate revenue influences measurements, scores or ranking positions.
7. Ordering a test of your own server
Where the Service lets you order a test of your own server, you confirm that:
- you are the lawful owner of the server, or have the owner’s explicit permission to run load measurements on it;
- you understand that tests place significant load on CPU, disk and network and may temporarily degrade the server’s performance;
- you will not give us access to servers holding third-party or sensitive data.
We are not liable for consequences of testing: load, hitting provider limits, suspensions or downtime. How we handle credentials is described in the Privacy Policy.
8. Reviews and user content
By posting a review you are responsible for its content and confirm that it is based on your genuine experience.
Prohibited: knowingly false statements, insults, spam, advertising, other people’s personal data, and reviews commissioned by a provider or its competitor.
We moderate reviews and may reject or remove any of them without explanation. By posting a review you grant the Service a perpetual, non-exclusive right to store and display it on the site.
9. Acceptable use
You may not:
- misrepresent our data when quoting it, or strip it of its context (plan, location, date);
- present our measurements as your own;
- scrape or bulk-export the results database without written permission;
- place load that interferes with the Service, circumvent access restrictions or technical protection measures.
10. Intellectual property and citation
The design, texts, methodology, source code and data presentation belong to the project.
Quoting is welcome — with attribution to “VPS Observatory” and an active link to the relevant page. When quoting numbers, always include the context: provider, plan, location and test date.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, uninterrupted operation or fitness for a particular purpose.
We make reasonable efforts to keep measurements accurate, but we do not warrant that data, calculations or their presentation are free of errors.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Service is not liable for:
- decisions you make based on published data, and their consequences;
- the quality of services, acts or omissions of third-party providers;
- any indirect damages, lost profits, data loss or downtime.
Choosing a provider is your decision and your responsibility. We give you numbers; the conclusions are yours.
13. Third-party links
The Service contains links to provider websites and other external resources. We do not control their content, terms or privacy practices and are not responsible for them. Following an external link means any further relationship is between you and the owner of that site.
14. Changes to these Terms
These Terms may be updated — for example, when new features appear. The current version is always published on this page, with the last update date shown at the top. We aim to reflect material changes in the revision date. By continuing to use the Service after an update, you accept the new version.
15. Contact
Questions about these Terms, reports of data errors and removal requests: use the contact form.
If you are a provider and believe a measurement is incorrect — write to us. We re-check disputed results and, if an error is confirmed, we correct it publicly.
