Privacy Policy
Last updated: 16 July 2026
- We do not sell your data and allow no ad networks or third-party trackers on the site.
- There are no visitor accounts — no signup needed.
- We keep our own visit statistics without tracking cookies: they cannot follow you across other sites.
- Data is stored on a server in Amsterdam (EU).
- You can request deletion of your data: the contact form.
1. Who processes the data
VPS Observatory is a private research project run by an individual. The project is not a legal entity and determines the purposes and means of processing on its own, i.e. it acts as the data controller.
For any questions about data: the contact form.
2. What data we collect and why
The full list — nothing omitted. If it is not in this table, we do not collect it.
| Category | What exactly | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visit analytics | IP address, user-agent, OS, browser, device type, page opened, interface language, timestamp, pseudonymous visitor identifier | Understand which pages are useful and improve the project | Legitimate interest |
| Outbound clicks | The address you clicked through to from our site, and the time | Count which providers readers care about, and attribute affiliate clicks | Legitimate interest |
| Reviews | The name or pseudonym you provide, rating, review text, a hash of your IP address | Publishing the review and preventing spam and vote manipulation | Your consent (form submission) |
| Test orders | Server access credentials (SSH), server address | Running the measurement you requested | Performance of your request |
| Cookies | Session identifier and CSRF token | Form security, cross-site request forgery protection | Strictly necessary |
| Web server logs | IP address, request, response code, user-agent, timestamp | Security, fault diagnosis, attack mitigation | Legitimate interest |
The pseudonymous visitor identifier is an irreversible hash computed from your IP and user-agent together with the site’s secret key. It lets us tell one visitor from another, but it cannot identify you personally and does not work outside our site.
3. What we do not do
- we do not sell or rent personal data;
- we do not use Google Analytics, social network pixels or any third-party ad networks;
- we do not track you across other sites and do not build advertising profiles;
- we do not require registration and do not collect visitors’ contact details;
- we never publish full IP addresses — neither yours nor those of tested servers.
5. Tested servers and credentials
If you give us access to a server to run a test:
- credentials are stored encrypted and used solely to run the measurement;
- once the job finishes they are irreversibly deleted;
- the agent measures performance and collects system facts (CPU model, kernel, virtualization type). It does not read or copy your files or database contents;
- the full IP of a tested server is never published — only its hash is stored with the results, while the provider, city and ASN are shown publicly.
We strongly recommend giving access only to servers without third-party or sensitive data, and revoking access after the test.
6. Who receives the data
We do not share data with third parties for their own purposes. However, the site physically runs on someone else’s infrastructure, and these companies technically process data on our behalf:
| Company | Role | Where |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean, LLC | Website and database hosting | Amsterdam, Netherlands (EU) |
| Cloudflare, Inc. | DNS, CDN and attack protection — all traffic to the site passes through their network, so they process your IP address and request metadata | Global network; the point of presence nearest to you |
| ipregistry.co, ip-api.com | Identifying the hoster, ASN and country from an IP. Important: only the addresses of tested provider servers are sent there — never visitors’ IP addresses | EU / USA |
In addition, we disclose data where required by law or where necessary to defend against attacks and abuse.
7. Transfers outside the EU
The site and database themselves are located in the Netherlands (EU). Cloudflare, however, is a global network, and some IP-lookup services are located in the USA. In those cases transfers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC), which these companies apply by default.
8. Retention
- Server credentials (SSH) — deleted immediately after the test finishes.
- Web server logs — removed automatically by rotation.
- Visit and outbound-click statistics — stored pseudonymized and purged periodically; we only need them in aggregate.
- Reviews — kept while published on the site, or until you request removal.
- Measurement results — kept indefinitely: this is research data and its historical value is the whole point. It contains no personal data.
9. Your rights
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you have rights under the GDPR. We honour them regardless of your country:
- Access — find out what data we hold about you.
- Rectification — have inaccurate data corrected.
- Erasure — have your data deleted (“right to be forgotten”).
- Restriction — have processing temporarily suspended.
- Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interest, including statistics.
- Portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format.
- Complaint — lodge a complaint with the data protection authority in your country.
To exercise a right, write to the address below. We respond within 30 days. Note: since we keep no accounts, we may need your IP address and approximate visit time to locate your data — otherwise we physically cannot identify you.
10. Security
The site works over HTTPS only. Server credentials are encrypted, IP addresses in reviews are stored as an irreversible hash, and the admin area is behind authentication and excluded from indexing.
No protection is absolute, but we apply reasonable technical measures and do not store what we do not need.
11. Children
The Service is intended for technical professionals and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect children’s data.
12. Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the data we collect or the tools we use change. The current version is always here, with the update date at the top of the page.
13. Contact
